Brian Danielson Says He Nearly Signed with Ring of Honor in 2018

Brian Danielson

AEW superstar Brian Danielson was at a crossroads back in 2018, when he was medically cleared by WWE to return to the ring, does he continue his career with WWE, or does he move on to another wrestling company such as Ring of Honor?

Danielson says that he considered making the jump, during an interview with Inside the Ropes, saying that when his contract with WWE was coming up, he had conversations with Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks, whose deals with ROH were expiring around the same time as his.

“It was really interesting, m contract with WWE was up in 2018 and I was considering going to Ring of Honor, and I was talking to The Young Bucks, and I was talking to Cody [Rhodes] just to kind of see” he said. “All their contracts were up with Ring of Honor and I was like, ‘What are you guys gonna do?’ Because even my lawyer, who doesn’t know anything about pro wrestling, he said; ‘Hey, I don’t think you’d wanna sign with Ring of Honor if these Young Bucks aren’t going because they’ve got this YouTube show, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, called Being The Elite’ and it’s essentially the driver for the popularity of Ring of Honor at the time, right?

“So those guys go away, we don’t know if Ring of Honor will nearly still be as popular and then with Cody’s contract coming up, if they leave, and Cody leaves, what will Ring of Honor’s popularity be like? So, that was a part of the discussion.”

Danielson re-signed with WWE, made his return to in-ring competition, and then departed in 2021 to sign with AEW.

Colt Cabana

Colt Cabana reportedly feared for his job at AEW after the company brought in CM Punk back in August 2021. Punk and Cabana had a nasty falling out, and Cabana saw his appearances on TV for AEW dwindle, something that many speculated was Punk’s doing.

During his Keeping it 100 podcast, Konnan recalled a meeting with Cabana during an AEW event where they discussed Punk.

“When I saw Colt Cabana backstage, I remember asking him, ‘So what’s up with you now that Punk is back?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, man” Konnan said (h/t WrestlingNews). “We’re not really talking.’ I go, ‘Come on, dude. After all these years, you guys were boys’ He said, ‘Yeah, man. He just won’t talk to me.’ He would kind of look around, like, he knew [he was going to be fired.]”

Since then, Punk has been suspended by AEW with his firing (or contract buyout) expected in the future, while Cabana has recently returned to AEW television.

Lio Rush Says AEW Didn’t Know What to Do With Him

Lio Rush

Lio Rush was one of the many former WWE superstars who appeared and competed for AEW, but his may be among the most confusing as Rush made his debut at the Double Or Nothing pay-per-view in 2021.

That was the first AEW show in front of a live crowd since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and while Rush’s debut popped the crowd, he didn’t last long with the company has Rush’s contract would expire in February 2022.

Following his departure, Rush spoke out on Twitter regarding a controversial tweet from AEW President Tony Khan on New Year’s Eve in 2021, and now claims that the company did not know what to do with him.

“Of course not” he said during an interview on the Say Less Podcast (h/t Fightful Select). “When I say things, I don’t wanna sound like it was breaking news because I feel like these things are so blatantly obvious. It’s like, yanno, he made it pretty clear to me, verbally, that when he was a fan of me, it was when I was in WWE and I was doing the manager stuff with Bobby [Lashley]. If that’s how he saw me, that’s the only light he sees me in… [then] that’s [probably what] he’s gonna shift me to be in that kind of role. Which I’m not, yanno… I’m so grateful for that time period [in WWE] because it taught me how to talk, it taught me how to present myself and build others up. No, I don’t think that [they] exactly knew what to do with me. That’s always a frustrating thing, but like you said when [I] say stuff it just gets f*cking blown up.”
